No rush to change gender – UK writer joins trans debate – Reuters

LONDON (Thomson Reuters Foundation) – Children should not make life-changing choices too early when “gender identity is more fluid”, British novelist Jeanette Winterson said on Thursday in an intervention that could anger trans rights activists.

We should respect everyone’s opinions. We should listen to all sides of this debate. Children have to be given the freedom to be themselves and express themselves accordingly in an environment for which is safe to do so without fear of bullying, harassment or prejudice.

We should not rush such decisions around children being able to chose their own gender without consultation from all walks of life. This is a huge social issue we are currently facing and one that must not be taken lightly.

Whatever we decide as society we must realise that more and more children and adults are starting to identify as gender-fluid, non-binary or transgender. We must start to grow up as a society and face these issues with the dignity and respect they deserve.
